Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is not used for protein synthesis, but is mainly found in free form in most tissues, especially the nervous system. This element stabilizes tissue cell membranes, facilitating the movement of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium in and outside the cells. Taurine contributes to the generation and regulation of nerve impulses, and also maintains normal water balance. In addition, this amino acid is used in the visual tract, as well as in the brain and nervous systems, where, together with glycine and GABA, it acts as a neurotransmitter.
