This article is a translation of the original material on the Optimum Nutrition website -PRODUCT AUTHENTICATION TIPS. It discusses how to verify the authenticity of the company's products using the example of 100% Whey Gold Standard protein. This material only applies to products manufactured in the USA. Products manufactured at the Optimum Nutrition plant in Europe have significant differences. This applies to both the shape of the can, and the protective membrane, and many other differences.
How to check the authenticity and distinguish a fake 100% Whey Gold Standard?
Removing the protective black polymer film with a hologram

As part of our ongoing efforts to protect the environment, we are removing the black plastic film on the lid and the gold hologram from Gold Standard 100% Whey cans. This is a transitional process, so you may receive a can with or without the film on the lid depending on where or when you buy. Other products with black, silver or clear plastic films will also be discontinued in the future.
Can Bottom Design and Shape

The photo above shows what the bottom of a can of Whey Gold Standard proteins made in the USA looks like. In the American versions of the cans, the weld is clearly visible, which indicates the technology of plastic thermoforming. All cans look the same - such a weld is a sign of the original. Cans made in the UK have a circular indentation without a line running through the bottom. This is normal for European cans of Whey Gold Standard protein.
Date and batch code (lot number)

On the bottom or side of the can you will find an inkjet print indicating the production date, expiration date and lot number. Powder products have a shelf life of 2 years, so the dates should differ by exactly 2 years, for example 01/18 - 01/20. On capsule, tablet and softgel cans, the dates and batch code are printed on the side of the label in white or off-white (it is also worth considering the fact that on some packages the Batch code becomes less visible due to various external influences).
Vacuum cardboard membrane

Optimum Nutrition protein cans have a cardboard barrier that helps keep the powder in place during transportation. This glossy white protective disc should be glued to the top of the can. Ventilation elements may be visible on the cardboard, they are necessary to reduce pressure during transportation. Check that the membrane on the outer rim of the can is not damaged.
New look, same proven quality

The world's best-selling whey protein has a new look. Since redesigning is not a quick process, you may receive either of these designs depending on where or when you buy. Our updated packaging will be rolled out to all Optimum Nutrition products in due course. Remember that both GOLD STANDARD 100% WHEY label designs are authentic and contain additional quality markers listed on this page.
Unique code on the sticker

Optimum Nutrition has launched a program to verify the authenticity (genuineness) of ON products. All ON products (except bars and cakes) will have special stickers, under the protective layer of which there is a unique code that allows you to check the originality of the product.
