Hydroxymethyl butyrate or HMB (from the English beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyric acid) is an organic acid that is formed in the human body due to the breakdown of the amino acid leucine, which is part of the BCAA. Leucine is found in very high concentrations in muscle tissue. During strength training, micro-muscle damage leads to the destruction of leucine, and therefore an increase in HMB levels. Evidence suggests that an increase in hydroxymethyl butyrate concentration may serve as a biochemical signal to the body to suppress muscle tissue breakdown. For this reason, hydroxymethyl butyrate has become a popular supplement in bodybuilding. However, despite the promises of the manufacturers, the research results are conflicting (as shown by meta-analysis of the data) due to the violation of test rules. & quot; Attention & quot; Be careful not to confuse hydroxymethyl butyrate with hydroxybutyrate. Unlike the former, hydroxybutyrate is a sedative and is often used for recreational purposes as a narcotic.
