Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that has a high antioxidant and radioprotective effect, is involved in the biosynthesis of heme and proteins, cell proliferation, and other important processes of cell metabolism. Another name for fat-soluble vitamin E is tocopherol. This vitamin includes a group of 7 vitamins that differ in biological action. Among them, alpha-tocopherol is the active form. Vitamin E improves tissue oxygen uptake. It has an angioprotective effect, affecting the tone and permeability of blood vessels, stimulating the formation of new capillaries. The immunomodulatory effect of vitamin E is due to the stimulation of T-cell and humoral immunity. It is especially important for immunity in the presence of chronic infections and in stressful situations.
After absorption in the intestine, most of the tocopherol enters the lymph and blood, is quickly distributed in the tissues of the body with a predominant accumulation in the liver, muscles, adipose tissue. The highest concentration is observed in the adrenal glands, pituitary gland, gonads, myocardium. It is used during the period of convalescence after injuries, severe somatic diseases, with physical overload, with an unbalanced diet.
Increasing the dose of vitamin E is widely used in modern bodybuilding during periods of "hard" training. This is due to the ability of vitamin E to regulate muscle activity, preventing fatigue. At the same time, vitamin E acts as an important regulator of protein metabolism in muscles and affects the normal functioning of the gonads. Those, in turn, continuously provide the bodybuilder with the most important hormone - testosterone. Hypovitaminosis E can develop after significant physical overload. In the muscles, the amount of myosin, glycogen, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and creatine sharply decreases.
Thanks to its antioxidant function, vitamin E successfully fights free radicals that contribute to the development of various pathologies. Tocopherol helps to neutralize the effects of these chemicals and also prevent the formation of carcinogens in the body. Vitamin E is effective when combined with other antioxidants. Thus, the presence of vitamin C significantly enhances the anticancer effect of vitamin E. Through a number of moisturizing properties of vitamin E and its ability to penetrate the skin, tocopherol is often used in the production of cosmetics.
Vitamin E is involved in the formation of the retina, helps in maintaining the vitamin A necessary for the eye, protects against the negative effects of free radicals that cause cataracts and retinal degeneration. Studies have shown that taking high doses of vitamin E prevents age-related destruction of protein structures that are important for the immune and nervous systems, and results of the aging process - memory loss.
The need for vitamin E increases with exercise. Selenium deficiency in the body also requires the intake of increased doses of the vitamin. With a deficiency of vitamin E, hypotonia and dystrophy of skeletal muscles develop, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, premature aging, myocardium, inflammation of the digestive tract, nervousness, irritability, absent-mindedness, sexual dysfunctions (decreased potency in men), increases the permeability and fragility of capillaries, degeneration develops photoreceptors, which leads to visual impairment. Decreased sexual function develops in men and menstrual irregularities in women. Lack of vitamin E provokes serious diseases, including some types of tumors, cataracts, arthritis, heart disease. Symptoms of the disease may not appear for many years when there was a constant lack of vitamin E in the diet.
