Astaxanthin is one of the most powerful antioxidants known in nature. Most of this unique substance is contained in the single-celled microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, also recognized as the most environmentally friendly way to extract the most efficient and purest Astaxanthin. Astaxanthin "catches" free radicals both in the water-loving (hydrophilic) zone of the cell membrane, and in the lipophilic (fat-loving) membrane zone, unlike most other antioxidants that work either on the internal (vitamin E and beta-carotene), or on the outer side (vitamin C) of the membrane. This action is provided by the unique structure of astaxanthin - thanks to the polar groups at both ends of the long astaxanthin molecule, it can be located in both the inner and outer layers of the cell membrane. However, unlike other antioxidants (vitamins C and E and beta-carotene), astaxanthin never turns into a prooxidant or a substance that promotes free radicals.
